From cylinders to PCM-F1
Ted Kendall and CEDAR:
Respected mastering engineer Ted Kendall has just taken delivery of CEDAR's NR-3 noise
reduction system for his remastering facility located on the Welsh borders.
Kendall set up his studio in 1988 following five years at the BBC transcription service
in Kensington House, West London, where he worked as a recording engineer on material
as diverse as Stephane Grappelli, Fairport Convention, and the Vienna Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Says Kendall, "I am delighted that there is finally a de-hiss system available that I can
use with confidence on almost any material from the oldest cylinders to digital recordings
that require localised repairs. I particularly like the way in which CEDAR's new
'perceptual' curve functions allow me to remove useful amounts of hiss without altering the
essential character of the sound. This is especially useful when reconstructing a recording
from many disparate sources. The essential fact is that, just like CEDAR's declickers a few
years ago, CEDAR's noise reduction capabilities have now crossed the Rubicon. NR-3 works."
Kendall has recently been responsible for the best-selling Glenn Miller CD sets called
"The Lost Recordings" and "The Secret Broadcasts" that were released by BMG/Conifer.
He has also undertaken the mammoth project of restoring "The Goon Shows" for BBC Worldwide,
and is currently involved with projects for re-issue label Memoir Records, operatic
specialists The Vintage Music Company, established jazz specialist label Hep Records, and
leading nostalgia label Past Perfect, another long-time CEDAR user.
