CEDAR Patents New EQ Process

CEDAR Cambridge Linear Phase EQ

27 June 2003

CEDAR Audio is pleased to announce an ingenious new EQ process named Constant Power Equalisation™ (CPEQ™). Supplied as a facility within the new CEDAR Cambridge Linear Phase EQ, this keeps the loudness of the output signal constant, regardless of the EQ shape applied to the input signal.

Invented by CEDAR's Audio Engineer, Tony Webster, and developed by Engineering Director Dave Betts, Constant Power Equalisation avoids the psychoacoustic effect that makes louder signals sound brighter and punchier than quieter ones. Says Webster, "Whenever engineers apply more EQ boosts than cuts, it is always tempting to feel that the louder signal is the better, even if - on closer comparison - it is not. CPEQ makes it possible to alter the tone of a signal without affecting its loudness, so it becomes just about impossible to make this mistake. I suspect that it may soon become a standard form of EQ, which is, of course, why we have submitted the patent application."
